It has been used for a long time to make beads, intaglio and cameo carvings and jewellery. In ancient Egypt, it was often carved into bowls. In feng shui, Black Onyx is used as a protective stone in amulets, bracelets and carved animals.

Onyx is a variety of banded chalcedony, a member of the quartz family with a hardness of 7. It can be found in Brazil, the USA, Canada, Scotland and Russia.
