History and Uses

Pyrite derives its name from the Greek word for fire, because it produces sparks when struck together. It has also been called fools gold, because its colour has a resemblance to gold.

Ancient Incans used this crystal for mirrors. Traditionally, it has been a stone for protection, good luck and vitality. It is associated with the sun and active male Yang energy.

Geological Description

Pyrite is an iron sulphide mineral with a hardness of 6 to 6.5. It is found all over the world but important deposits are in Italy, Spain and Peru. The Rainbow variety is found in Russia.
