History and Uses
The name Citrine comes from the French word citron meaning lemon. It was used as a gemstone in Greek jewellery as long ago as 300BC. This crystal varies in colour from the deep amber of heat treated Amethyst to the pale yellows and browns of the natural variety.
Citrine is a member of the quartz family, a silicon dioxide mineral with a hardness of 7. Its yellow colouring comes from the inclusion of iron in the quartz.
Natural Citrine is mostly a pale yellow colour, while the darker, more orange specimens are often heat treated Amethyst. This is the most widely found and most popular type of Citrine. Deposits are found in Brazil, Africa, Madagascar, Spain, Russia, France, Scotland and the USA.

The oldest records of Peridot date back to 1500 BC. It was mined in Zabargad, an island in the Egyptian Red Sea. It was considered a symbol of the Sun from Ancient Times to the Middle Ages. Apparently, according to a Greek manuscript it confers royal dignity to its bearer.
Interestingly enough, it was a favourite of the ancient Egyptians too. They used to crush it into a powder to treat asthma, relieve thirst and heat and to ward off evil spells. Peridot is also known as Olivine and Chrysolite. It varies in colour from yellow, to brownish-olive green depending on the amount of iron in the crystal.
