Lapis Lazuli Crystal Healing Properties

Lapis Lazuli is a stone of reflection and self knowledge. It activates the higher mind and psychic abilities and has traditionally been used to assist one in connecting with the gods and invoking divine inspiration.

Lapis helps to create a clearer perspective on ones life and assists with the identification of habits, patterns or lessons that may be blocking ones spiritual progress. It can uncover the karmic roots of illness and highlight where one might be self sabotaging ones healing.

History and Uses

The word Lapis Lazuli comes from the Latin words lapis for stone and lazulum derived from the Persian word lazaward the name of a place where it was mined. The word azure for blue in many languages derives its name from this stone.

Lapis Lazuli has been mined in the Sar-i- Sang mine in Afghanistan for over 6000 years. It is a semi precious stone which was highly prized by many ancient cultures including the Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians,Egyptians, Harrapans, Greeks and Romans.

It has been found fashioned into amulets, beads, knife handles, statues and inlaid in bowls which are thousands of years old. Powdered Lapis Lazluli was used as eye makeup by the ancient Egyptians and was made into the very expensive and sought-after ultramarine blue paint used by the masters in Renaissance Europe.

Catherine the Great used Lapis Lazuli to decorate the St Petersberg palace with 2 metre tall urns carved from solid Lapis.

Geological Description

Lapis Lazuli is a sodium aluminium silicate with sulphur, chlorine and hydroxyl, and variable inclusions of pyrite and white calcite.

It has a hardness of 5 to 6. Lapis mostly comes from the West Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, with other deposits found in Chile and Russia.

Jewellery Care & 1 Year Warranty

In jewellery form, some crystals are more hardy than others. For everyday wearers, we recommend crystals that fall in the Quartz family or have a Moh's hardness level of over 5.5-6. Avoid excessive water exposure, especially in pools or the ocean and any harsh chemicals. Delicate crystals like Amber, Moonstone, Opal, and iron-based meteorites need gentle handling due to potential discolouration or structural risks. Store safely, and clean with care. Rest assured that our 1-year jewellery warranty covers any manufacturing defects. With proper care, we expect your pieces to last many years to come. In our 18 years of business, we still wear some treasures from our original collection! Learn more about our warranty and care guide here.
