Larimar History and Uses
This rare specimen was first discovered in 1916 in Barahona in the Dominican Republic. However, it wasn’t mined until 1974 when the source of this remarkable blue stone was found in the Bahoruco Range. The man who discovered it named it after a combination of his daughters name; Larissa and mar. Mar means sea in Spanish and he found the first specimen washed up on the beach. This crystal is a rare and unique pectolite. Its blue colour and resemblance to the sea comes from cobalt or copper substituting for calcium. Above all, this calming crystal carries a strong believed energetic connection to dolphins and the sea. Consequently, Larimar reminds us to embrace change and go with the flow.
Larimar is a sodium calcium silicate mineral with a hardness of 4.5 to 5. So, it forms in cavities within basaltic lava and comes only from the island of Hispaniola, in the Caribbean Sea.
