History and Uses
Fluorite derives from the Latin word fluor or fluere, meaning to flow because when melted it is used as a flux in iron smelting. In the 16th century Agricola, a German scientist named it fluorspar from the German flusse (stream, river) and spar from spærstān (spear stone) a mineral similar to gypsum referring to its crystal projections.
It can be found in all the colours of the rainbow plus pink, brown, black, white and clear. Due to the presence of europium, yttrium, ytterbium, or organic matter in Fluorite it can fluoresce blue, red, purple, yellow, green or white under UV light and in 1852 when the phenomenon of fluorescence was discovered it was named after Fluorite. It is also a source of hydrogen fluoride, which is chemically converted into fluorine, fluorocarbons, and a diverse range of fluoride materials.
Geological Description
Fluorite is a calcium fluoride crystal with a hardness of 4. It can be found in a wide variety of colours, often in the same specimen. Major deposits of Fluorite are found in Germany, England, China, Argentina and the USA.
