History and Uses
chrypistaScolecite derives its name from the Greek word ‘sko-lecks’ meaning a worm, which refers to its ability to curl when heated. Scolecite was first recognised as a mineral species in 1813 in Germany, and given the German name skolezit, ten years later. It can occur in colours of white, colourless, pink, salmon, red and yellow. Usually, it grows in delicate, needle-like sprays or in larger, blade-like crystalline forms. Scolecite, like Clear Quartz and Tourmaline, is pyroelectric and piezoelectric, meaning it gains an electrical charge through heat and pressure. Also, some specimens can appear fluorescent yellowish in ultraviolet light.
Geological Description
Scolecite is a hydrous calcium aluminium silicate, a zeolite mineral with a hardness of 5 to 5.5. It is formed as thin vertically striated prismatic crystals or radiating fibrous masses and is found in Teigarhorn, Iceland and Poona in India.
