History and Uses
Trilobites were Marine arthropods living in the Early Cambrian to Late Permian Period (570 million – 230 million years ago). Trilobites were hard-shelled, segmented creatures that grew in various sizes from just three millimeters long, to a length of 70 centimeters. They were among the world’s first arthropods, a phylum of hard-shelled creatures with multiple body segments and jointed legs (although the legs, antennae and other finer structures of trilobites are only very rarely preserved). Scientists believe they reproduced sexually, moulted and underwent a series of life stages. We know trilobites lived in a variety of marine environments over the course of their existence on our planet. Feeding habits are believed to have been varied including predators, scavengers, filter-feeders and parasites, depending on both the type of the trilobite and their life stage. The majority are believed to have been predators/scavengers due to the presence of a calcified mouthpart called a hypostome.
The most common fossil of trilobites is the mineralised dorsal exoskeleton of the creature. This is found in partial form from moulting (shedding the shell as it grows) or in complete form when the animal was buried and died intact.

In ancient times they were believed to be a gift from the stars and were revered by many cultures. Geological Description
Fossilisation is actually a rare occurrence because organic materials tend to decompose and the process requires the relatively quick preservation of bodily remains. Normally, the remains need to be covered by sediment or trapped in resin as soon as possible. However there are exceptions to this, such as if an organism comes to rest in an anoxic (without oxygen) environment at the bottom of a lake. The oldest known structured fossils date from 3.5 billion years ago. There are several different types of fossils and fossilisation processes including permineralisation, mold or replacement fossils, compression fossils, resin fossils and trace fossils. Many fossils available on the market are from Morocco, which has vast deposits of Devonian Limestone which date back three hundred fifty million years ago. Other areas prominent for fossils are China, the USA, Germany, Canada, Russia and Australia.
