Six Hours South
With flooding blocking access to the Larimar mines, our journey took an unexpected turn when a local policeman connected to the mines offered to show us another side of Larimar instead.
The Family Workshop
Hidden off the coastline was a small family workshop filled with rough slabs, polishing wheels and freshly cut Larimar in every shade of Caribbean blue.
Larimar in the Raw
We were lucky enough to rummage through their AAA grade specimens with gemmy pockets and spectacular colour, all so reminiscent of the native Caribbean waters.

Where is Larimar found?
Larimar is found only in the Dominican Republic, making it one of the world’s rare and distinctive blue gemstones.
Is Larimar suitable for everyday jewellery?
While Larimar is still a great stone to be worn as everyday jewellery, it is a slightly softer gemstone with a Mohs hardness of around 4.5–6 depending on the piece. So, it should be worn with care and protected from knocks, chemicals and prolonged water exposure.
