The Navajo believed it to be Clear Quartz that first caused the Sun to cast its light upon the world. Quartz is a silicon dioxide mineral with a hardness of 7. Its crystal system is hexagonal which grows in a large variety of formations. Although the majority of Quartz is from Arkansas, Brazil and Madagascar it is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. However, it can be found in almost every continent in the world. Crystal Quartz exhibits the property of piezoelectricity. As a result, this means it can transform mechanical energy (e.g. pressure) into electromagnetic energy and vice versa.

Lapis Lazuli Crystal Healing Properties

History and Uses

The word Lapis Lazuli comes from the Latin words lapis for stone and lazulum derived from the Persian word lazaward the name of a place where it was mined. The word azure for blue in many languages derives its name from this stone. Lapis Lazuli has been mined in the Sar-i- Sang mine in Afghanistan for over 6000 years.  It is a semi precious stone which was highly prized by many ancient cultures including the Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians,Egyptians, Harrapans, Greeks and Romans. It has been found fashioned into amulets, beads, knife handles, statues and inlaid in bowls which are thousands of years old.  Powdered Lapis Lazluli was used as eye makeup by the ancient Egyptians and was made into the very expensive and sought after ultramarine blue paint used by the masters in Renaissance Europe. Catherine the Great used Lapis Lazuli to decorate the St Petersberg palace with 2 metre tall urns carved from solid Lapis.

Geological Description

Lapis Lazuli is a sodium aluminium silicate with sulphur, chlorine and hydroxyl, and variable inclusions of pyrite and white calcite. It has a hardness of 5 to 6. Lapis mostly comes from the West Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, with other deposits found in Chile and Russia.

Fluorite Crystal Healing Properties

Fluorite derives from the Latin word “fluor” or “fluere”, meaning to flow because when melted it is used as a flux in iron smelting. In the 16th century Agricola, a German scientist named it fluorspar from the German “flusse” (stream, river) and “spar” from “spærstān” (spear stone) a mineral similar to gypsum referring to its crystal projections. Flourite can be found in all the colours of the rainbow plus pink, brown, black, white and clear. Due to the presence of europium, yttrium, ytterbium, or organic matter in Fluorite it can fluoresce blue, red, purple, yellow, green or white under UV light and in 1852 when the phenomenon of fluorescence was discovered it was named after Fluorite. It is also a source of hydrogen fluoride, which is chemically converted into fluorine, fluorocarbons, and a diverse range of fluoride materials.

Fluorite is a calcium fluoride crystal with a hardness of 4. It can be found in a wide variety of colours, often in the same specimen. Major deposits of Fluorite are found in Germany, England, China, Argentina and the USA.
