History and Uses

Agates come in a variety of forms and are named after the Achates river, now called the Dirillo river, in Sicily where they were first found in the 3rd or 4th century BC. This stone has had a long association with humans. Neolithic people made some of their artifacts from Agate. It is a stone that has been known to bring strength and stability to the wearer.

Geological Description

Agate is a form of banded Chalcedony, a mineral of the quartz group. It has a trigonal crystal structure and a hardness of 7. It is found in Brazil, South Africa, Botswana, Morocco, Czech Republic and the USA.
