In the 1860’s, the German traveller and geologist Ferdinand von Richthofen coined the name Rhyolite after finding it in his explorations of the Rocky Mountains. Rhyolite has been mined since prehistoric times in Pennsylvania in the USA, where fifty small quarry pits have been found.
