They raise kundalini energy and activate all the chakras strengthening and balancing the entire body. They help us to recognise what no longer serves us and to let go of those things which we may have outgrown. Traditionally they have been used to treat infertility in both men and women.
History and Uses
Also called Bana Lingas, which in ancient Sanskrit means a “sign” or “symbol”, of the phallus of the Hindu God of Creation Shiva. These egg-shaped, two toned sacred stones represent the balance of male and female primeval powers of creation, symbolising the cosmic egg from which all of creation emerged. The reddish stripes, spots or rings represent the female aspect (wisdom) in the grey elongated shaped stone which represents the male aspect (knowledge), the yoni (feminine energy) is the seed which is fertilised to manifest the Divine creative power in Shiva’s dance which sustains the cosmos. Legend has it that the original Prithvililingam was made from sand by the Goddess Parvati to honour Shiva. The Shiva Lingams in the Hindu temples which formed naturally by the action of rolling in the holy Narmada River are called swayambus, other lingams are gathered once a year in a special ceremony, then polished and shaped by hand.
Geological Description
Shiva Lingams are egg shaped crypto-crystalline quartz with inclusions of iron oxide and a hardness of 7. They are found in the holy Narmada River in western India. Geologists theorise that the iron oxide which makes up the red markings may have been impregnated into the river bed millions of years ago by a meteorite.
