Howlite Crystal Healing Properties
Howlite is often considered a calming stone. It is believed to help reduce anxiety, tension, and stress, promoting a sense of tranquillity and relaxation.
It is thought to aid in emotional healing by encouraging the release of negative emotions, such as anger and resentment. It is believed to promote patience, self-awareness, and emotional expression.
Some people use Howlite as a sleep aid, placing it under their pillow or keeping it nearby to promote restful sleep and prevent insomnia.
Howlite is associated with improving communication and self-expression. It is believed to help articulate thoughts and feelings more effectively, making it beneficial for public speaking or conflict resolution.
History and Uses
Howlite was named after Henry How, a Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist. He first identified it in 1868, in Nova Scotia, where it was found by gypsum miners.
As this stone is porous, it is often dyed to replicate Turquoise, Red Coral or Lapis Lazuli. The dyed variety is called Magnesite and marketed as Blue Howlite or Turquentine.
The natural variety White Howlite, is also known as “white turquoise”, “white buffalo turquoise,” or “white buffalo stone”. This variety is often used in carvings or beaded jewellery.
Geological Description
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral with a hardness of 3.5. It is rare to find it in crystal form. It most often occurs as opaque white irregularly shaped nodules, with grey streaks. It is found in California and Nova Scotia.
